The sports battle was a side issue. Genk striker Tolu Arokudari had to be helped off the field with a crutch after a serious collision with Hugo Kuipers. Ghent’s colleagues, Ismail Kandous and Gift Urban, helped the Red Cross volunteers.
For KAA Gent, this was the second time this week that they faced a medical (emergency) situation. Goalkeeper Paul Nardi suffered a serious ankle injury on Thursday, and now Tolo has suffered a head injury.
The Genk striker’s failure also had a major impact on the match.
Because coach Wouter Vrancken had exhausted all his substitutions, no one was able to replace the unlucky striker. With ten to eleven, Genk received an equalizer from Tarik Tisoudali at the end of stoppage time.
We should have been smarter in the end.
Coach Wouter Franken, who had no update on Tolo’s condition, was disappointed afterwards about the points he dropped.
“We really played the perfect match,” he analyzed Eleven DAZN. “We created chances and missed few. We just had to be smarter at the end. Even with ten men we had a chance to finish the game off. Or we had to keep the ball in the corner to allow extra time to end.”
