American actors ratify the agreement, and the months-long strike is now officially over | Showbiz

ShowbizAfter a months-long strike, members of the actors union SAG-AFTRA have ratified a new labor agreement with movie studios and streaming services. The union announced this on Tuesday.

This ends the long-standing strike that began in July. The agreement had previously been approved by the union leadership. Members had several weeks to make their voices heard before the new agreement officially entered into force. If they had voted against it, the strike would have started again.

The actors demanded, among other things, higher wages, improved pension provisions, access to viewing figures for streaming services, and clear agreements on the use of artificial intelligence. According to SAG-AFTRA, 78 percent of members approved the new multi-year contract. “This is a golden age for SAG-AFTRA and our union has never been stronger,” union president Fran Drescher said in a statement.

Negotiations broke down several times. An agreement was reached in November that would allow the actors to return to work until it was ratified. Not only did actors stop acting, but they also stopped promoting films and series between July and November, prompting studios to postpone many major releases by a year. Thousands of union members took to the streets every day in cities like New York and Los Angeles to demonstrate.

Since the strike and ratification of the contract took six months, this new contract will be in effect for two and a half years. Then negotiations begin again.
