It didn’t all go without a fight. The first Model S battery lasted 402,000 km, the second 670,000 km, and the third 505,000 km. The Tesla has now traveled 150,000 kilometers on its fourth battery. Only 8 percent of this battery’s original range is gone, so it will likely last a while.

The weak point of the Model S is not the batteries, but the electric motors. According to von Gemmingen, these malfunctions occur on average every 20 thousand kilometers. The German’s battery lasts on average about 50,000 kilometers – perhaps due to his calm driving style – but he is already using his 13th electric motor. One engine performed well: it lasted 78,000 km.

Although Tesla replaced all defective motors free of charge, the frequent driver complains that Tesla never disclosed the problems the motors of this model had and continue to have. Instead, the company ignored him several times when he asked questions about the matter.

A new set of tires had to be fitted every 50,000 km. He doesn’t know what his adventure has cost him yet. “I’ve never calculated that so accurately before.” It can’t really be that expensive. After all: As a Tesla driver since the beginning, he receives free electricity via the car manufacturer’s so-called superchargers.

According to the German, Tesla has nothing to do with nearly 2 million kilometers and does not support it. Only eleven months after Von Gemmingen reached the million-kilometre mark, Tesla boss Elon Musk himself responded with a thumbs-up via Twitter.

Von Gemmingen’s next goal is to break the all-time record. At the moment, this is in the name of the now-deceased American Irv Gordon. He has driven a total of 5.2 million kilometers in his Volvo P1800.
