Finland will reopen two border crossings with Russia this week. These areas were closed in November because, according to the Finns, the Russians deliberately sent the migrants there. Prime Minister Petri Orbo said the borders would be closed again immediately if necessary.
The Valimaa and Nirala border crossings will be operational again for a trial phase from December 14 to January 14, 2024. According to Finnish authorities, nearly 1,000 asylum seekers have appeared at border posts since the beginning of August. This mainly concerns the population of Somalia, Iraq and Yemen.
Helsinki accuses Moscow of deliberately allowing migrants to cross. “This is a hybrid attack aimed at destabilizing Finland,” she added. The Kremlin rejected these accusations.
