Canada will be put on trial for doing nothing for the climate, say a group of fifteen young environmental activists. Activists had filed a lawsuit against the federal government over the issue four years ago. A federal judge denied their request, and the case was reopened on appeal.
The federal Court of Appeal has ruled that a trial must be held to determine whether the actions of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government violated the youth claimants’ rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, according to a decision published Thursday.
The statement, seen by Agence France-Presse, said: “Climate change is having a significant and rapidly evolving impact on all Canadians.” “There is also no doubt that the burden of addressing the ramifications will disproportionately impact Canada’s youth.”
In 2019, the youth, who were between the ages of 10 and 19, filed a lawsuit against the federal government. They say it contributes to global warming by failing to implement an ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A year later, a federal judge denied their request, but an appeals court overturned that decision on Wednesday.
