Russia introduced the first fully domestically produced electric car: “Avtotor Amber”. But after the photo was leaked, the car became a target for ridicule. The Russians contemptuously call him the “Tesla killer.” It looks a bit like the Fiat Multipla, considered by many to be the ugliest car in the world.
You would almost think this is fake news spreading from Ukraine. But the first “100% made in Russia” electric car was presented in Kaliningrad, Russia. Avtotor is a major Russian automobile manufacturer. Founded in 1996, it has grown into one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers and assemblers.
BMW, Hyundai and Kia cars were being assembled at the factory, until Western sanctions stopped that. In addition, they are also working on their own models.
50,000 annually
Inspired by the success of cheap Chinese electric cars, the factory set out to build a car made entirely of Russian parts. The city car has become “Avtotor Amber”. They will go into production from 2025 and the goal is to build 50,000 per year.
After the first photos leaked, the car immediately became a target for ridicule. Russian accounts on the Telegram application said: “It is hoped that the appearance will be different, otherwise no one will want to buy it.” Others contemptuously call the car the “Tesla killer.” The car was also mocked on Twitter. It feels like “finally a worthy successor to the Fiat Multipla.”
