A large forest fire broke out on Saturday morning in Altea, Spain, a city located on the Mediterranean Sea in the province of Alicante. It is an area where many Flemish people live. “Letters came from everywhere last night. Everyone was worried about his house,” says Marko Sieferman, 55. He runs his own real estate agency there and manages several homes in the affected area. “We were really afraid the fire would reach the top.”
The fire broke out this morning at around 3:30 am near the camp area. It was a forest fire that instantly spread very quickly. After about 45 minutes, the first people had to be evacuated. Flemish Marko Siverman has his own real estate office there and lives nearby. “My phone suddenly rang,” he says. “I know a lot of people in the affected area and we also have a number of buildings under major management. So everyone was worried.”
The fire spread to the Altea Hills neighborhood. And this is where Marco wanted to go tonight. But that was without counting emergency services. “All the main roads were completely closed. “You can't get anywhere via normal roads,” he says. “Meanwhile we saw helicopters flying in water to put out the fires. They did everything they could to get the fire under control quickly. But we received photos and videos from people who live there. “We really wanted to go there, but it didn't work out.”
Especially the damaged stands
Meanwhile, Marco managed to reach the scene. There it was found that the fire had mainly destroyed much of the forest land. It appears that the damage to the homes themselves is not too bad. “It's mainly about the damaged balconies. Things are still burning. But the fire doesn't seem to have spread to the houses anywhere. That's the most important thing.”
We call Marco around 2:30pm. According to him, the fire had only been extinguished for twenty minutes at that time. “We were really afraid the fire would reach the top. The camps are located on the sea itself and are a little less populated. But the Altea Hills are still inhabited. Fortunately they were able to stop it before it reached the homes there.”
