According to the New York Times, the cyber attack was part of US operations in response to a drone strike in Jordan that killed at least three US soldiers. The attack was allegedly carried out by Iran-backed Iraqi forces.
The MV Beshad, the target of the cyber attack, was cited as operating near Djibouti, across the strait that connects the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea. The aim was to block communications from the ship to the Houthis. No further details have been announced.
The Houthis, who control northern Yemen, say they are attacking ships in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
US Department of Defense spokeswoman Sabrina Singh declined to comment further, The New York Times reported. The newspaper pointed out that this is not the first time the US has used a cyber attack in recent times. On February 2, the Times reported that other Iranian targets had been hit in a similar manner and that three more American soldiers had been killed in retaliation.
