Many media outlets in Britain and the United States point out that official rules require immigrants in America to give up “hereditary titles or noble positions in a foreign country.”
The youngest son of King Charles discussed the possibility of applying for an American passport, in an interview with “Good Morning America” on Friday. “American citizenship is definitely an idea that crossed my mind,” he said. However, it is unclear whether Harry was aware of the US rules. His spokesman declined to comment.
Earl of Dumbarton
As well as being the Duke of Sussex, the Prince is also Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. Harry obtained these titles in May 2018 after he married his wife, Meghan. In 2020, the Prince bid farewell to the title of His Royal Highness. He made this agreement with Queen Elizabeth after the prince announced that he would step back within the royal family. He also settled in the United States that year with his family.
However, attorney James L. Leonard Jr., who has worked on several immigration cases in the past, tells Page Six that Harry may be spared. He says there has never been a similar case before, and that it could become a “unique problem” for the American legal system. “I can't think of any other member of the royal family who has applied for American citizenship,” he said. “I can't imagine such a scenario ever existing, and I think it would raise a lot of interesting questions.”
