It's been almost two years since Apple launched the new iPad Air. In fact, not a single new iPad has been released in 2023, so a lot is definitely expected to happen in the iPad space in 2024. We've previously been looking forward to the new iPads for 2024, and now it's time to dive deeper into the 2024 iPad Air (known as Also named iPad Air 6) specifically. These are the new features you can expect in the iPad Air 2024.
#1 Two sizes for the new iPad Air 2024
The biggest innovation of the iPad Air 2024 (if we can believe the rumors) will be the two new sizes of the model. In addition to the 10.9 or 11-inch version as we already know, there will also be a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air. We already know this size from the iPad Pro, but thanks to the new iPad Air, you might as well opt for this if you don't need the functionality of the more expensive Pro, but want the size.
#2 New faster chip: M2 (or M3?)
It should come as no surprise that the new iPad Air will have a faster chip. The iPad Air currently has an M1 chip which is also very fast. We don't think iPadOS currently uses the full power of the M1 chip, but a new, faster chip could have advantages as well. According to rumours, the iPad Air 2024 will have an M2 chip, although we wouldn't be surprised if Apple immediately opts for an M3 chip. After all, the M2 chip is almost two years old and still feels a bit dated. Furthermore, the new iPad Air will likely arrive at the same time as the new 2024 iPad Pro, which will likely feature an M3 chip. So it also seems logical to put an M3 chip in the iPad Air.
The big advantage is that graphics-intensive apps perform a little better, but it may also ensure Apple Pencil Hover functionality makes it to the iPad Air. This lets you know where you're going to draw or write, even before your Apple Pencil hits the screen.
#3 Flash may be coming to iPad Air
The iPad Air has a nice camera, but it doesn't come close to the iPad Pro, let alone recent iPhones. This isn't necessary, but it's notable that the iPad mini has a better camera than the iPad Air. This mainly concerns flash. The iPad mini and iPad Pro both have an LED flash, so you can take better photos in certain lighting conditions. Also useful for a good scan, for example. And based on the leaked sketches, it looks like the iPad Air 2024 may also get an LED flash. In our opinion, a very logical addition.
These graphics also show that the iPad Air will have a larger (pill-shaped) camera bump as a result. Currently, the iPad Air only has a small, round camera lens that sticks out, but with the arrival of the LED flash, this may stand out a bit. This has been the case for some time with the iPad Pro (which also has a wide-angle lens and a LiDAR scanner).
#4 Other improved specifications
We expect the iPad Air 2024 to also have slightly improved specifications in other areas. Consider a new Bluetooth version (5.3 instead of 5.0) and better WiFi. Currently, the iPad Air already has fast WiFi 6, but recent Apple products like the iPad Pro and iPhone 15 Pro are equipped with better WiFi 6E. Although it's not strictly necessary for applications, the addition of WiFi 6E ensures that the device is more future-proof.
#5 New Colors (But Which Ones Are Still a Surprise)
The iPad Air has also been all about new colors since the fourth generation. The iPad Air is the model where Apple is giving the iPad some amazing new colors, although it has also done so with the standard model since the 10th generation. We expect that you will be able to choose from several new colors with the iPad Air 2024. With the previous generation we got purple (instead of green) and the blue color was modified slightly. We weren't necessarily very happy with the purple variant, so we're hoping Apple changes that color again this year for a more eye-catching color.
