Intel offers Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids-D processors

Intel is announcing two series of Xeon processors at MWC in Barcelona, ​​codenamed Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids-D.

Intel will showcase two new Xeon families at MWC in Barcelona: Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids-D. The manufacturer has been talking about both chipsets since August last year, but is now providing more details.

Sierra forest

For example, Sierra Forest is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year. Sierra Forest is a special type of Xeon chipset, aimed at workloads that primarily make use of many cores rather than high-performance cores. To that end, these chips contain up to 288 computing cores, but they are not P cores as with traditional Xeon chips. Instead, Intel is filling the chips with more efficient electronic cores. The chip will be of particular interest in the context of the cloud.

Since Intel is talking about the Xeon processor in the context of Mobile World Congress, it is natural for the chip specialist to emphasize that the processor is ideal for basic 5G workloads. Intel is talking about 2.7x better performance compared to the 2021 generation Xeon.

Granite Rapids-Dr

Go to Granite Rapids then, or more specifically Granite Rapids-D. These chips come with AI sauce and have something called vRAN Boost. This should once again attract telecommunications service providers, as vRAN enhancement ensures that operators are able to serve users on their radio networks more efficiently. Just like last year, Intel wants to highlight its Xeon chips as the central processing units (CPUs) used in the communications backend.

Granite Rapids-D is a variation of Granite Rapids for servers. These chips are supposed to be released in 2024, but the D version will have to wait until sometime in 2025.
