Members of the US Congress are outraged by TikTok's call. This week, the company is calling on users to call politicians en masse because of the app's threatening ban. Politicians say the flood of calls is “undermining the law”.
According to The New York Times Several members of Congress have been inundated with calls from TikTok users this week. The protest was sparked by a bill introduced in the US Congress this week.
If passed, the law would require TikTok to sever ties with ByteDance within six months. The Chinese company owns the popular app. If TikTok doesn't sever those ties, the bill would ban the app.
And many politicians say they support the motion. This is what President Biden and others talked about last Wednesday Support Out of bounds.
TikTok later sent out a call to US users: “Let Congress know what TikTok means to you, and tell them to vote no.” Below the message was a button to find politicians and their numbers. You can see in the picture below.
Politicians' offices are flooded with phone calls
American media like The New York Times Write that the users respond in large numbers to the call. For example, many members of Congress' offices are flooded with hundreds to thousands of phone calls.
According to the technical website Information The office had to turn off the phone due to so many calls. The bill's authors condemned TikTok's action because it “disrupts the legislative process in Congress.”
The reason behind this bill is national security concerns. For example, members of Congress fear that Chinese authorities could access US users' data through the app.
There are also concerns in Europe. For example, last month the European Commission announced an investigation into TikTok. Commission officials are also not allowed to have the app on their work phones.
