AUDIO PLAY: The Maserati MCXtrema can play outside for the first time [VIDEO]

We don't know if you've noticed it yet, but Maserati is doing a real reboot. Until a few years ago, its range was stagnant to say the least, but since then we've suddenly seen a Grecale, a new GranTurismo, a new GranCabrio, and even an MC20 supercar. If you thought the latter was crazy enough, the Italians aren't finished yet because the MC20 also got a track version: the MCXtrema.

Struggling in the rain

We can now see that power in daylight for the first time, and not even a little. Maserati launched its MCXtrema at the Autodromo Varano de' Melegari and was kind enough to take some video shots of it in between. They chose the rainiest day in the Italian calendar to do this, and you know what: we are very happy about that. For example, in the pictures, you regularly see an MCXtrema struggling to get grip, while hearing the engine revving like crazy while sliding… and oh yeah, turn on the sound because that's the coolest thing in the entire video.

Exactly what you hear at work here is the new 3.0-liter Nettuno V6 engine that Maserati is also installing in the MC20. However, the sound does indicate that the MCXtrema has lost a significant amount of damping, and in fact: this track car is no longer street legal. In addition, the Italians treated the block to two new turbines, which pump out power up to 730 hp. Combine that with a curb weight of just 1,300kg and rear-wheel drive, it would have been a huge challenge getting the MCXtrema to go in a straight line while filming this amazing video…
