Real Madrid took a 2-1 lead in the final seconds of the match, after the long VAR was used. The visitors gave their all and De Ligt scored the equaliser, but the party did not happen. The Polish referee canceled the goal due to offside. The Germans felt very cheated at that point.
“It was a disaster,” Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel said afterwards. “An absolute disaster and a clear violation of the rules of the game. The rule is clear: the stage must be completed. The first error was from the line referee and the second from the referee.”
Apologies
Matthijs de Ligt even received an apology from the line referee. “If it’s offside, it’s offside. But the rule says if it’s not clear, you have to let play continue. It’s just a big mistake.”
“The referee said to me: ‘Sorry, I made a mistake.’ Yeah, I don’t buy anything for that,” De Ligt continues. “I don’t want to say that the referees always side with Real Madrid, but tonight made the difference.”
Marc Degryse also shared the same opinion at VTM Studios. “I don’t dare say the goal was offside,” Degressi said. “The line referee should not have raised a signal, then the attack could have continued. It was very close. You also have to take the moment into account, it’s the 95th minute in the Champions League semi-final… so you shouldn’t make a hasty decision.”
