The US government has secretly authorized Ukraine to use US-supplied weapons against targets on the Russian border. The permit applies only to areas around Kharkiv province, where Russia has launched a major offensive in recent weeks. A US government official and two sources said this on Thursday Politics.
Weapons must be used for “return fire” and not to initiate an attack. The decision was “made in recent days” following a request from the Ukrainian government. Washington’s refusal to allow Kiev to attack targets elsewhere in Russia “has not changed.” The US government is yet to officially confirm this news.
The shift in U.S. policy is in line with statements from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron earlier this week. They said Ukraine could use Western weapons against military targets in Russia if Ukraine were attacked from there. “We believe that we should allow them to remove military bases from which missiles are launched, military bases that are under attack in Ukraine, but we should not allow them to attack other targets in Russia,” Macron said. “No civilian targets, but no other military targets either.”
