In a cruel twist of fate, Borussia Dortmund could earn more money if they lose in the Champions League final to Real Madrid than if they win. The main character in this very extraordinary situation is Jude Bellingham.
Last summer, Dortmund striker Jude Bellingham moved to Real Madrid for more than 100 million euros. Due to some clauses in the contract, this amount can increase.
For example, the rewards of winning La Liga and qualifying for the next Champions League are already a reality, but there is more.
If Real Madrid wins the Big Ears Cup, Dortmund will receive an additional 5 million. If Bellingham is also selected for this year’s Champions League Team of the Year – a serious option if Madrid win – another 2 million will follow.
Here lies the paradox. The winner of Champions League gets 20 million euros and the loser gets 15.5 million. So the difference is “only” 4.5 million.
If you add Good Bellingham’s premiums, the Germans, in the event of a loss, would end up with 20.5 million, perhaps 22.5 million.
On Saturday, Dortmund’s accountant will know how much can be added to the account. But no one expects that Borussia, even for a lot of money, will miss the opportunity for eternal fame.
