Blue tongue

Bluetongue is a viral disease that occurs mainly in sheep. Other ruminants such as goats, cows, deer and camels can also be infected, but in these species the virus is less lethal. Infection occurs due to the bite of small mosquitoes (midges) that carry the virus. Sick animals cannot directly infect each other and the disease cannot spread to humans.

Serum

In 2022 there were 723 thousand sheep in the Netherlands. Since September 2023, more than 37,000 sheep have died due to the virus. The last time bluetongue occurred in the Netherlands was in 2006-2008.
Midges are less active in winter, but the virus does not completely disappear. The first vaccine became available more quickly in April. Sheep are now being vaccinated, alleviating fears of a widespread outbreak of the disease next summer.

Bird flu

The Netherlands is an important center for migratory birds. Millions of migratory birds stop in or pass through the Netherlands every year. Migratory birds can carry the avian influenza virus.
There are different types of bird flu (also called bird flu). There is a mild and pathogenic form of bird flu. This highly pathogenic species is particularly contagious to chickens, ducks and turkeys. For example, waterfowl, shorebirds and starlings are also sensitive to it. Sometimes mammals, such as foxes, also become infected. People can also become infected with bird flu. This never happens. The government is taking precautions for people who have a higher chance of becoming infected.

Epidemic

In the Netherlands alone, 6.9 million birds, mostly chickens, were killed between January 2021 and May 2023 to prevent the spread of the virus. This bird flu epidemic, with outbreaks on poultry farms and among hobby farmers, is the largest since 2003. One trial has shown that two vaccines work well against the spread of the virus. The government wants to make widespread vaccination possible, and has laid out a step-by-step plan to make this happen.
