“Star Wars: The Acolyte”: The High Republic turns out to be an illusion that finally collapses

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) portrays a peaceful and prosperous society for Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in Star Wars: A New Hope. The reality appears to be clearly different. The High Republic had enough scum to make your hair stand on end. This makes it clear that the question “Who is a Sith?” Perhaps too simple and unambiguous.

The “Star Wars” universe is much more complex than the Jedi/Sith dichotomy. Backstory in the form of books and comics explains that the High Republic had many deadly opponents who fell outside of both groups. One example of this is the Nihil, a group of space pirates who openly fight the Jedi. For a while, they had complete control over a group of planets and space travel in that part of the galaxy. From there, these villains set out to defeat both the Republic and the Jedi Order. Nihil emerged from an evil group called the Path of the Open Hand. These creeps made it their goal to instantly eliminate anyone sensitive to the Force.

In addition, the organization of the Sith is more complex than it seems at first glance. Having the rank of assistant meant that the rule of two was not strictly enforced. An Acolyte is, after all, a servant of the Apprentice, which means you have two Sith and one Sith Candidate. However, the book “Darth Plagueis” by James Luceno (2012) shows that there were a greater number of Force users who worked with the Dark Side. In the book, Darth Tenebros kills his master, Darth Plagueis, only to discover that there is a servant at his side. The rule of two was clearly on the wane during the High Republic.

The above shows that the Force, the dark side, and the Force-sensitive are actually messier than you might initially think. As a result, May’s (Amandla Stenberg) connection with the mysterious figure called the Master is not as direct as the viewer might think.

It’s tempting to assume that May is the assistant. If this indeed turns out to be the case, it does not automatically mean that the Master is a Sith. Maker Leslye Headland is known for her complex stories that build gradually, allowing the viewer to see how different layers are revealed. From that angle, the mystery has only just begun.
