Nijmegen has become richer in wonderful architecture in the last couple of years. On Architecture Day, we put the award winners and nominees for the Nijmegen Architecture Prize in the spotlight. Learn the stories behind the stones and learn about the importance of timber construction and reuse during an ACN bike tour.
Hortis Lodi
“An inspiring example of the realization of wooden construction,” the professional jury judged Hortus Lodi, winner of the Nijmegen Architecture Prize. Designed in harmony with the neighboring monastery, Hortus Lodi is collective, circular, climate-adaptive and nature-inclusive, offering a ready answer to pressing spatial challenges, such as climate-neutral construction and communal use. Architect Nina Albers (MAKEN Architecture) talks about the design philosophy behind Hortis Ludi and the necessity of wooden construction for contemporary architecture.
The handsome one
This year, the Audience Award and Honorable Mention went to De Vasim, a large-scale reuse project of an old factory building and turning it into a cultural hotspot. Roy van Maarsven (Zecc Architects) talks about design and the importance of reuse in relation to sustainability. With minimal modifications, the former artificial silk weaving, fly ash processing and cultural spinning mill now accommodate an extensive social programme. Creative companies, start-ups, culture, sports, education, events and catering can now be found under one roof, in a building that has retained its distinctive strong, industrial look.
Three candidates
We will also visit three nominated projects. Koen Geraedts (Boeijenjong Architects) talks about the transformation of Blommers Coffee’s NYMA water basin, which was originally listed for demolition, but has now increased the quality of the surrounding site.
Urban planner Kees Zoon takes us to Hart van de Waalsprong, where we visit Parkeerhuis Bliek, among other places. The new city district has a distinctive character through clear attention to sustainability, water, green spaces and exciting urban (brick) architecture.
Architect Andrea Dollfsma (Van Hoogevest Architecten) talks about the renovation of the west church at Sint Stephenskerk, where the privacy of the church blends admirably with the grandeur of the church space.

We will start together with a duet show by Nina Aalbers and Roy van Maarsven at Die Wassem. Then we visit Hortis Ludi, Stevenskerk, De Vasim, Blommers Waterbasin and Hart van de Waalsprong by bike.
