The Suriname Ministry of Health wants to inform the community about new research showing that tattoos can increase the risk of cancer. This type of cancer affects the lymphatic system and is dangerous.
Key findings:
- Increased risk: People with tattoos have a 21% greater risk of developing cancer than people without tattoos.
- Certain types: The risk is especially higher for diffuse large B-cell carcinoma (30% higher risk) and follicular carcinoma (29% higher risk).
- Tattoo Surface: The size of the tattoo does not seem to affect the chance.
These findings come from a large-scale study among Swedish adults between 2007 and 2017.

Tattoo paint often contains substances that can cause cancer. When applied to the skin, it can trigger a reaction in the body that contributes to an increased risk.
