A fire broke out at a bankrupt horse farm in Normandy yesterday. Up to seventy horses were killed, most of them mares and foals. The 21-year-old man who discovered the fire suffered burns to his hands. The complex is lost. Gendarmerie forces do not suspect arson, but have opened an investigation.
The fire broke out at the castle’s stud farm in Prinsek on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at 5:40 am. It covers more than 1,000 square meters and houses seventy horses, mostly mares and foals.
It declared bankruptcy
The stud farm was founded in 1981 and was first declared bankrupt in May 2018, after it (then owned by the Peneloch family) was placed into guardianship in 2017. The horses were kept in filthy stables, were given no food and were thin. Only trained racehorses were properly cared for. The manager was sentenced to a life ban from breeding horses. The stud farm was liquidated in 2019 and was taken over for the Sarona stud which housed approximately fifty horses. On December 13, 2023, the Caen Court opened a new liquidation procedure.
