Toko Koka (Japan) and India Paige-Relay (New Zealand) started the Olympics with defeat. Japan lost 2-1 to world champions Spain and New Zealand lost 2-1 to Canada.
Spain 2-1 Japan
Beynoord star Koga was named in Japan’s starting line-up against Spain in Nantes. The Japanese took the lead on fifteen minutes. Aoba Pugino scored a beautiful goal from a free kick. After ten minutes the score was 1-1. Aidana Bonmetti scored for Spain.
Koga and co held out long, but Spain scored in the 74th minute. Mariona Caldente scored a 2-1 win in Spain’s first match at the 2024 Games.
Canada 2-1 New Zealand
Earlier, there was already a lot of buzz about the match between Canada and New Zealand. It had everything related to ‘drone spying’. Canadian employees tried to spy on the enemy with drones. A complaint was filed and two Canadian employees were expelled.
Thursday evening in Saint-Étienne was mainly about football. With India-Paige Riley (PSV) in the starting lineup, New Zealand took the lead after thirteen minutes of play. Mackenzie Barry scored a good goal. Just before halftime, Canada equalized through Chloe Lacasse.
Evelyn Wiens scored the winning goal with about fifteen minutes left in the match. Jesse Fleming’s pass made it 2-1.
