The final episode of House of the Dragon season 2 has caused mixed reactions among many fans. The series created high expectations for the finale in 8 episodes, but the scene that many were hoping for did not come true. Now the showrunner is giving clarifications about the disappointing episode during a press conference.
“This has to be the biggest scene we’ve ever done.”
Fans were clearly disappointed on social media. Messages were critical, some downright scathing. “Did you just watch a 70-minute trailer for season 3?” X said. “44 minutes into the season finale and nothing has happened.”
Fans were convinced they were in for a big fight, Battle of Golet Exactly. But nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, this season has been mostly about politics, strategizing, and a few small council meetings. The characters have largely stayed at home in their castles.

Fortunately, showrunner Ryan Condal has good news for anyone who feels that season 2 hasn’t quite delivered the climax they were hoping for. During a virtual press conference, he acknowledged that the pacing and lack of action may be disappointing for some, but he assures fans that the wait will be worth it. “We’re gearing up for a moment that’s coming very soon in the story, and it should be the biggest scene we’ve ever created,” he says.
So he still points to Battle of the esophagusthe long-awaited battle which, according to experts, plays a decisive role in the further course of the series.
Ryan explains that the choice not to show this battle in season two was made very consciously. “We wanted to have the time and space to do it at a level that would excite and satisfy the fans, as it deserves,” he explains. He acknowledges that fans’ patience will be tested, but stresses that the buildup to this epic event is essential to its impact.
What can fans expect from season 3? Although the scripts are still in development, Ryan says production is expected to begin in early 2025. According to him, season 3 will be one of the most exciting seasons yet.
Time will tell if Ryan and his team can live up to the high expectations. Eric de Munck is certainly excited for season two:
