Court is investigating possible false testimony of Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurtz | abroad

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is under investigation by prosecutors for his testimony in an investigation into a corruption scandal known as Ibizagate. According to the opposition, Curtis lied, but claimed he told the truth.

The ÖVP leader himself announced the news before the cabinet meeting. According to Curtis, the ongoing investigation has no consequences for his work as a consultant. He also said not to leave.

Ibizagate is about Kurz’s former vice-chancellor, Heinz-Christian Strache of the right-wing populist FPÖ. In 2019, an old video filmed in Ibiza appeared in which it appeared that Strache was willing to award public contracts in exchange for assistance in the 2017 elections. The scandal brought down the first government of Curtis.

The alleged corruption is being investigated by a parliamentary committee that is also looking into other allegations of misconduct by politicians in Kurtz’s party, among others. This comes at a time when ÖVP’s finances are increasingly in the spotlight. The home of a ÖVP minister was searched earlier this year in a separate investigation into alleged violations of party funding.
