Evenboule misses pink in first mountain stage, Mader wins | Giro Ditalia May 8-30

RoundRemco Evenepoel just missed the pink shirt in Giro’s first mountain stage. Our compatriot quickly responded to Bernal’s attacks in the last climb and finished fourth in today’s result. The stage victory was for Swiss Gino Mader.

Today in Giro, it was the first mountain stage on the list, with access to the summit. In San Giacomo we went in search of a successor to Roger De Vlaeminck, who had won a stage in Tirreno-Adriatico in 1977. Who would not succeed him is Mikel Landa, who was derailed yesterday by an unfortunate fall in the last kilometers. The pink shirt was also waiting at San Giacomo, because in principle the final ascent was too difficult for Alessandro de Marchi.

Then to the race. An early separation of eight people occurred in two segments. The Belgians were joined by Jimmy Janssen, Dario Cataldo, Simon Ravanelli, Simon Guglielmi, Gino Mader and Mattej Mohoric, Boke Molema and Geoffrey Bouchard several years later. The eight did not ride more than 5 minutes ahead of each other.

Not the forca di Gualdo ascent, the first ascent of the day, inspired attacks at the peloton, but after the summit the race suddenly exploded. Enos Grenadiers – and especially Jana – broke the whole Peluton to shreds. Remco Evenepoel and the other taxonomists were vigilant, and the rose-clad De Marchi was already falling across the ice.

Unlike yesterday, it rained cats and dogs again in Italy today. Ciccone, Bardet and Bettiol took advantage of the Forca di Presta’s long landing to distance themselves from the other candidates, but were brought back into order before the final ascent. In the foreground, the lead group was split in half: the Janssens disappeared from the photo, leaving only Mollema, Mohoric, Mäder and Cataldo.

Mollima and his colleagues began their ascent to San Giacomo, about 3 minutes apart. It turned out that that was enough for victory today, although it was Gino Mader who showed himself the strongest in the lead. The Swiss remained on the goal line, out of the grip of a group with Bernal and Evenbueuil, who had just missed the pink shirt. That was for the Hungarian Attila Walther.
