Italy sent the German auxiliary ship “CI4” with more than 400 migrants on board to Pozzallo, south of Sicily. The German relief organization Sea-Eye responded decisively. Sea-Eye staff was ready in Palermo, on the other side of the island.

“It is completely incomprehensible for us that Pozzallo is the next safe haven for immigrants while we are in Palermo,” said CI spokesman Jordan Eisler.

Italy’s ANSA news agency said Italy had issued an official order to sail to Pozzallo port on Wednesday evening. Earlier, the ship was on its way to Palermo, where the mayor said he wanted to help. On Wednesday afternoon, the Coast Guard arrested a young man from a group of 415 immigrants with a heart condition, Sea-Eye reported. “The migrants, including about 150 children and pregnant women, will have to spend another two nights on the ship because of the voyage,” said Isler.

In recent days, rescuers have taken people from boats on various missions. Migrants usually come to Italy from Libya or Tunisia. According to United Nations figures, more than 575 people will have died trying to cross the Mediterranean by 2021. More than 2,000 refugees recently arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa over the weekend.
