“The two sides have conducted an open, pragmatic and constructive exchange,” the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said. On the American side, there was talk of a “candid” conversation. Usually the use of this language in diplomatic circles means there are some differences.
The US Commerce Department added that during a “hypothetical introductory meeting” the trade envoy revealed the Biden administration’s “worker-centered” policies and also spoke of a “continuous review” of US-China trade relations.
Biden himself said earlier that he sees China as the biggest competitor. He is not looking for a conflict with China, but he will “defend American interests in all fields.”
The last time trade talks took place between the two countries was in August of last year. Then Donald Trump was still the president of the United States.
Both countries have been in a trade dispute for three years, with reciprocal penalty rates. A partial agreement was signed in January 2020, again cutting some import duties. China also promised to buy more American products.
