There were few surprises in Roberto Martinez’s choice, but one day before preparations start in Tobies, the national coach is still rocking a white rabbit by his hat: Thierry Henry returns to the coaching staff.
The French was formerly T3 and T2 with the Devils under the current national coach, but a few months after the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Henry left the Belgian team to become coach of Monaco.
That wasn’t successful and after a break he tried to relaunch his MLS coaching career. But during the coronavirus period, Henry decided to live close to his family again. So he was free and would help the demons in word and deed in the following weeks.
“It is an honor and a privilege for Roberto Martinez and the other staff to ask for help in the upcoming European Championships,” Henry said.
“It is a continuation of a story that has not ended yet. We will do our best to complete the story successfully.”
Roberto Martinez is pleased with Henry’s return. “We are delighted that Thierry has joined this European championship,” said the national coach. “His experience in the tournament and his knowledge of international football is a great added value for our staff.”
“Thierry knows nearly every player and employee personally. It is very natural that we can now follow the story that started during the last World Cup qualifiers and ended with a bronze tournament in 2018.”
Henry is the T3 of the national team during the European Championships. Scott Sean Maloney, 38, is the Senior Assistant to T2 National Coach.
