According to data released by Peopleforbikes on Thursday, Provincetown is the most bike-friendly small city in the United States and the fourth largest bike-friendly city in the world by 2021.
The group noted which city was number one in the past, but this year it has expanded to more than 750 cities and towns around the world to showcase the best communities for cycling. Provincentown was the only city in the United States to make the top 10 list on Thursday.
“It’s always nice to see Provinestown in another top 10 list – be it the best beaches, the best hotels or the best LGBT destination,” said President Rick Ahalberg.

In the United States, Provinestown tops the list of smaller cities, Berkeley in California tops the list of medium-sized cities, and Brooklyn in New York ranks highest in major cities. The report said all three cities were identical.
The Peopleforbikes report tells the winners that “there are safe, interconnected bike paths, lanes, tracks and street systems that make cycling an interesting and efficient mode of transportation.”
“What’s interesting to me is that most people who live here don’t particularly like cycling in the city, which is the way it has always been,” Ahlberg said. “I was involved with the cycling team in these projects because we took our daily cycling culture for granted. I wanted to see how cycling could be more common here than anywhere else.”
One reason for this fourth annual ranking is that cycling safety is said to provide leaders with action ideas to improve cycling in their communities.

Ahlberg said the data-driven team rankings would be helpful in justifying current Pravinstown regulations, such as riding both ways on a commercial street, and would help demonstrate to the team the importance of ongoing bicycle development projects.
Bicycles are allowed on all roads in Provincetown, and there are more than 7 miles of bike lanes within the Cape Cod National Beach boundary, according to the Cycling Authority. bikeprovinciown.org.
The organization said Peopleforbikes’ ranking was based on two factors: the quality of the area’s cycling network (network score) and the community’s opinion on cycling (community score), including online surveys of locals and cyclists.
Statistics from Bikeprovincetown.org show that Provincentown has the highest number of cyclists in Bornstable County, in percentage and overall. According to 2015 figures, 12.8% of the city’s travel is significantly higher than other bike – friendly communities, with Nantucket and Falmouth each accounting for 2.7%.
“Travel figures are based on the city’s smallest population throughout the year, so they do not take into account the number of people who cycle for daily shopping or the number of cyclists in the summer,” the site notes.
For the summer 2017 season, just 5,700 bike tickets have been purchased for boats between Provinstown and Boston, a city port official said.
A bit of history as mentioned by Bikeprovincetown.org: Early plans for bike tracks to connect with other parts of Cape Cod date back to 1899. In 1967, the Lands County Bike Trail became the first bike trail in a national park. In 1978, the government developed the first exclusive bike route, the MA-1, a 200-mile stretch from Boston to Provinestown.
Provincetown is the traditional end point for the annual Bon Black Challenge bike ride to raise money for cancer research.
This year the Peopleforbikes rankings feature 30 cities in Europe, with Utrecht and Kroningen topping the Netherlands; 42 in Canada, which is led by the cities of Langue and Montreal in Quebec; And 35 in Australia, Canberra and Alice Springs won the tournament.
