Denmark will set up asylum centers abroad, the United Nations and the European Union respond decisively

The law allows authorities to airlift asylum seekers to third countries, where they have to wait for their applications to be processed. The proposal came from Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Social Democrats, and was passed with the help of the liberal Finster Party.

The newspaper reported that the government has already held talks with Rwanda, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt Jyllands-Posten. There are no agreements yet to build refugee camps. People whose asylum application has been approved cannot count on coming to Denmark. The plan is for the person concerned to remain in the country or be transferred to a UN refugee camp.

‘Irresponsible’

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has criticized the plans in the past. Transferring asylum and refugee protection procedures to another country outside Europe is not a responsible and sustainable solution. “It also goes against the principles underlying international cooperation for refugees,” said Henrik Nordentoft, representative of the Nordic and Baltic countries. “The Danes can create a domino effect.”

The European Commission agrees. “The external processing of asylum claims raises questions about access to asylum procedures and protection,” a spokesperson said. He stressed that such practices are not possible within the current European regulations or the proposals for a new immigration agreement on the table. Denmark has a choice not to participate in the European policy on asylum and immigration.
