The Belgian army, which has been active in Afghanistan for 19 years, has completed a full return of troops from the country. On June 11, 44 Belgian soldiers have already returned to our country and this week the last three have arrived. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense.

The Belgian military has been active in Afghanistan since March 2002 following the attacks of New York and Washington on September 11, 2001. The attacks triggered Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which called on member states for collective defense.

The longest military operation

For the Belgian army, the military presence in Afghanistan was the longest operation ever. The army was able to complete the mission without casualties during the fighting. The last Belgian division’s operational mission north of Mazar-i-Sharif, as part of NATO’s Operation Resolute Support, ended on 17 May. Most of the soldiers returned to our country after four days.

The security situation in Afghanistan remains unstable, and peace negotiations between the government in Kabul and the Taliban insurgents have not been successful. For example, the Islamic movement is increasingly targeting the Afghan army, including areas adjacent to the capital, Kabul. However, in April the military coalition decided to permanently end the mission in Afghanistan and withdraw troops by 9/11 at the latest.
