The Tour de Wallonie will start on Tuesday with a stage between Genappe and Héron, but there will be no second stage on Wednesday. The second phase, which begins in Verviers, will be canceled due to the consequences of heavy flooding in the city. The organization decided this in consultation with the local administration for the arrival of the place of Hervé.
It was already certain that the beginning could not happen in Verviers. The city was severely damaged by severe flooding. But also the arrival of the place now pulled Herve. “We cannot guarantee optimal conditions for this popular cycling event,” local authorities said. “Our services, such as firefighters, police and municipal workers, are currently busy helping those affected. Searching for victims is underway, streets clearing and securing damaged homes. This is a time for mutual aid and solidarity.”
Christophe Brandt, organizer of the Tour de Wallonia, agrees with the decision. “We remain in solidarity with the victims of the extreme weather conditions that mainly affected eastern Belgium, and support the decision to cancel the second phase. In fact, the priority today is solidarity.”
Before the start of the first stage, the captain will observe a minute’s silence on Tuesday in memory of the victims.
