Shane Brospenninks is Keerin’s new Olympic champion. The Netherlands track cyclist attacked early in the final and advanced to the final. So he is the heir apparent to Elise Ligley, who won the title in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

The Braspenniks, who suffered a heart attack in 2015 and then overcame some problems, won the semifinals after a fine run and in the finals defeated Lauren Genest, Kelsey Mitchell (both Canadian), Ellis Andrews (New Zealand), Lyubov Pasova and Olena Starikova (both). Behind her, Andrews took the silver, and Genest took the bronze.

Hughes-Braspenniks now have two Olympic champions because his friend Jeffrey Hookland has already won gold with Dutch team sprinters at the Olympics in Tokyo. On Friday, Hookland also has a chance to win a medal in the individual sprint competition.

The other Dutch participant in Keerin’s match, Laurin van Raisen, fell early in the morning during the quarterfinals. She is in the hospital and she is unconscious.
