The European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) has just published a new map. On this map and data, FPS Foreign Affairs has established itself to craft travel advice. Flanders has been threatening to turn red for a while, but it looks like we’re just below the border. Moreover: almost all of France is turning red, and numbers are rising in Northern and Eastern Europe.
Every Thursday ECDC publishes a new map of Europe containing green, orange and red areas. FPS Foreign Affairs bases its travel advice on this map. This means that based on the ECDC map, some new areas are turning red. An area turns red if between 75 and 200 people per 100,000 residents have tested positive in that area in the past 14 days and the positivity rate is more than 4 percent. More than 200 infections per 100,000 inhabitants alone are also enough for the color red.
For a moment it looked as if Flanders were going to turn red. The ECDC map divides our country into three regions: Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. Since July 15, our entire country has been painted orange. The following week, Brussels turned red, but Wallonia and Flanders remained orange and we seem to be just below the limit in terms of pollution numbers.
Also new on the map: almost complete France It turns red. The south – Brittany, Burgundy and Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Piccardi – is now also red, only the center of the Val-de-Loire is still orange. in a Austria The federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg are orange. Spain It is still dark red, although there is some improvement in the province of Murcia. The autonomous region (and province) turned from a deep red to a “natural” color. in a Italy The Puglia region turned from green to orange. Calabria and Basilicata also go from orange to red. The numbers are also rising in Northern Europe. Norway I got some orange areas, in Sweden The north is now turning red. Also remarkable: that the eastern part of Europe has survived infection for a long time, although this may have been due to limited testing and unreliable statistics, but now also the colors Bulgaria Mostly orange.
What does this mean for travelers?
Important to know: The ECDC map will be published on Thursday and our FPS Foreign Affairs will adjust its travel advisory on Saturday. So there is some delay in travel advice. Specifically: countries that Thursday It was marked in red by ECDC so get Saturday New travel tip (and color code) from “our” FPS. As icing on the cake: “Does the color code change to red? Then the color code is effective as of Sunday,” according to the foreign affairs website.
* ALWAYS CHECK TO BE SURE This listing is on the FPS Foreign Affairs website. This is the only one that officially matters.
Is your destination in the “red” list above? Anyone who has been more than 48 hours without a full vaccination or has not (confirmed) the disease in the past six months should be tested upon return. This can be done in two places: either in the holiday country (where the test quickly costs 75 euros), or a maximum of 48 hours after returning to Belgium. You will have to quarantine while waiting for the result.
If the result of this test abroad is positive, you will usually have to sit in quarantine at your vacation destination.
