Nearly 600 migrants crossed the Channel towards the UK in one day | abroad

In one day, 600 immigrants crossed the canal this week. This is a new record, according to the British News Agency.

On Thursday, a man from Eritrea was killed while trying to reach the United Kingdom. But another 592 made the perilous journey that day, according to UK Home Office figures.

The 27-year-old died after he and four others jumped aboard when their rickety boat began to sink in the Pas de Calais. The man was taken by helicopter to the hospital when he was unconscious, but he died there a few hours later. About forty people on board survived the crossing. An investigation has been opened into the manslaughter.

So, according to the British Home Office, 592 people were rescued or intercepted in an attempt to cross the canal on the same day. This is a day log. French authorities have intercepted at least 155 migrants and returned them to continental Europe.

The previous record goes back to a week ago. On August 4, 482 migrants who attempted to cross were counted, the Palestinian Authority reports. It appears that more than 11,000 migrants have already managed to cross the canal in small boats this year.
