Tinder wants to enable users around the world to authenticate themselves with proof of identity. At the moment, this is only possible in Japan. The dating app hopes users are open to this themselves and says it will be on a voluntary basis for now.

In the coming quarters, identity verification will be available to users around the world, writes tinder. It is not yet clear what exactly that will look like and what documents users can use for verification. Tinder says it takes into account expert recommendations and user input. For each country, local legislation will be examined and the “most appropriate” documents identified.

According to Tinder, ID verification will be voluntary for now, unless otherwise required by local law. The company behind the app claims that the trial-based verification method will “evolve to ensure a fair, comprehensive and privacy-friendly method of identity verification”.

Spokesman Tinder tells TechCrunch This identity verification will be used to verify if the user is registered as a sexual offender, in the areas where it can be searched. Tinder already does this by using the credit card information the company obtains when users make payments in the app.

In 2019, identity verification was introduced on Tinder in Japan. Users from the age of eighteen must upload a copy of their passport, driver’s license or health ID there.
