Yusaku Maezawa, 46, who has made a fortune in fashion online, and his assistant Yuzu Hirano, 46, parachute down the Kazakh steppes early Monday morning, Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misorkin (44) responded. The footage shows the three exits from the Soyuz container they landed in. Roscosmos confirms that the astronauts are fine.

The flight marks Russia’s return to space tourism after a 10-year hiatus. In this sector, Russia mainly lost to private American companies, especially to Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The current return of interest is a potential unexpected financial gain.

The three men spent 12 busy days aboard the International Space Station. The Japanese billionaire had made himself a list of 100 missions he had to complete in space. Maezawa’s assistant made several videos about everyday life in orbit, for Billionaire’s YouTube Account. The man can be seen explaining to his millions of followers how to brush your teeth or go to the toilet when you are weightless.

“I am very interested in what it is like to be in space. So I plan to get to know personally and share my impressions with the world on my YouTube channel,” the Japanese said of his own trip earlier this year.

Maezawa is the founder of Zozotown, one of the largest online fashion stores in Japan. His net worth is estimated at around 1.8 billion euros. Exactly how much he paid for his space flight has not been revealed. But according to Space Adventures, an American company specializing in space tourism, the amount is between 44 and 53 million euros.

To the moon with SpaceX

It is possible that the Japanese billionaire will return to space in 2023, especially to the moon with a special capsule from American SpaceX.

Maezawa announced in 2018 jointly with Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, that he would make a spaceflight around the moon within a few years. He wants to do so with the Starship, a spacecraft that SpaceX is currently developing. The Japanese want to take many artists with him and give them inspiration for new works during the trip.
