A new scandal shakes the Netherlands: A TV presenter admits to bribery and resigns from work Showbiz

ShowbizAfter all the hype surrounding “The Voice of Holland” and “De Wereld Draait Door”, the Netherlands is once again under the influence of a television scandal. Lieutenant Colonel Khaled Qasim (45 years old) resigns from his duties at BNNVARA after being accused of bribery. The radio also confirmed this to the Dutch media. Qasim is said to have confessed in 2019 that he had bribed an official.

Qasim has been linked to bribery by the Dutch newspaper AD. According to the newspaper, in 2019, the famous criminal lawyer and journalist Peter R. De Vries (who died in 2021) stated that he had bribed a Ministry of Justice official in order to have his client released earlier. Khaled Qasim and Peter R. had De Vries had a law firm together at the time. According to AD, it concerns one of Kassim's clients at the time, who allegedly paid him 8,000 euros to bribe the official and thus release him early.

BNNVARA announced that the broadcaster was not aware of the case and described the accusations as serious. “Integrity is essential to BNNVARA and its makers. The accusations affect this integrity and must therefore be thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, Khaled has decided, in close consultation with BNNVARA, that he will resign from his position at BNNVARA for the time being.

Qasim denies these accusations, although AD has recordings. “Let it be clear that I have never been guilty of bribery,” he told the newspaper Achaemen Dagblad. “This is about a customer with a high outstanding invoice. You inappropriately tried to get some of that paid back. It's nothing more than that.”

Kasem, with whom De Vries owns the law firm De Vries & Kasem, said he had provided clarifications to the Dutch Bar Association. An investigation has now been announced. “However, due to confidentiality, no announcements will be made initially about the content and results of this investigation,” the order said in a short statement.
