17 years after the final episode of hit mafia series The Sopranos aired, the iconic dining table from the mysterious final scene has been auctioned off. An anonymous buyer was willing to pay about 76,000 euros for it.
In the past, The Sopranos has been ranked several times as the best series of all time. Mafia boss Tony Soprano is legendary, the main character played by the late James Gandolfini in the HBO series that ran from 1999 to 2007. In the much-discussed final scene of The Sopranos, the Mafia boss sits at the table with his family in a so-called “booth” ( Literally: booth, stall) of a restaurant in New Jersey.
Tony Soprano throws a coin into the music box on the table to hear “Don't Stop Believin'.” He orders onion rings. His wife and son join us. Daughter parking. It seems that the mafia member is afraid of a fatal denouement. A bell rings for every incoming client, a potential assassin. Then the image suddenly turns black. The question that has remained unanswered ever since: Did Tony Soprano die at that dining table or not?
The deep red sofas and yellow Formica table come from the real Holsten's ice cream parlor in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where the final scene of The Sopranos was filmed. The iconic dining table has been auctioned off since Monday evening. Co-owner Chris Carley set $3,000 as the minimum opening bid on eBay. He hoped to receive a sales amount of $10,000 (9,200 euros). He will then put that money toward a planned renovation of the ice cream parlor, because a renovation is badly needed after more than 60 years of service, according to The New York Times.
But the auction reached at least $82,600, or about 76,000 euros. The small jukebox is not included, but the furniture and booth section are included with a sign showing the soprano family's reservation.
Immediately after the series finale, Holsten's was very popular with fans who wanted to sit at the Sopranos table. When actor James Gandolfini died unexpectedly in 2013 at the age of 51, the place became a place of pilgrimage.
