Mrs. Leckie van Maren (fictitious name) has been coming to me occasionally for more than ten years for “maintenance treatment” for her headaches and migraines. Leckie is an energetic, cheerful 49-year-old woman married to Herman. They have three children and their own company with more than 250 employees.
Since Leckie was 15 years old, she has had severe headaches 3 to 4 days a week. Neurological examination revealed no obvious cause. After suffering for 20 years, in 2004 I read about a well-conducted scientific study that showed that acupuncture helped treat headaches and migraines better than conventional medications. British researchers published these exciting findings in the important medical journal The British Medical Journal.
Disbelief
Leckie didn't believe in acupuncture. But: “It doesn't help, and it doesn't cause any harm,” she told me in our first conversation. I hear this from many people during the first consultation. They're right: acupuncture is completely harmless and has no unpleasant side effects. And you don't have to believe in acupuncture: it does its job anyway.
Complaint free
After a series of treatments lasting about 8 weeks, Leckie was almost free of complaints. The attacks have practically stopped. When she had occasional problems, their severity was much less. Currently, she visits Lekki once every 3 months for so-called maintenance treatment. She hasn't had any annoying headaches in years.
Proven
At that time, the World Health Organization (United Nations World Health Organization) included headaches in the list of conditions: conditions and diseases in which, according to this organization, acupuncture helps. This lists over 100 pain, inflammatory, chronic, psychological and fertility complaints for which the World Health Organization considers acupuncture to be effective. This is why the World Health Organization recommends acupuncture as a treatment for headaches and other conditions in this category.
