The portrait of African-American poet and activist Maya Angelou appeared in a new generation of quarters, the famous American 25-cent coins. Coins will be put into circulation soon.

These are not collectibles, but coins that will be mass-produced for everyday use. A statement released on Monday said they were being beaten up in Philadelphia and Denver.

The new coins are the result of a congressional vote at the end of 2020, following a bill introduced by the California Democratic delegate.

So far, the 25 cent coin, the most widely used currency in the United States, has had only a few alternative versions. Traditionally, the coin features the image of the first President of the United States, George Washington, on one side and an eagle on the other.

The new coin retains a portrait of George Washington on one side and a portrait of Maya Angelou on the other. This is the first in the Outstanding American Women series, which will honor many illustrious women from diverse backgrounds.

Best known for her memoirs and poetry, Maya Angelou is considered one of the most well-known writers on the situation of African Americans in the United States. She wrote I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, an autobiographical novel considered a classic in American literature.
