After the holiday, a woman noticed that her parents’ house had been demolished

Susan Hodgson told the Associated Press that a neighbor called her while she was on vacation to ask if she had hired someone to demolish her parents’ house. Hodgson, puzzled, replied that this was not the case. The neighbor replied, “Well, someone demolished the whole house.”

After the conversation, the neighbor went to speak to the staff, but they reportedly took a very hostile attitude. The worker asked her neighbor to “shut up” and “mind her own business.”

Hodgson then sent a family member home to see what was going on. When permission was requested, it quickly became clear that the workers were at the wrong address. Hodgson said that when a company supervisor checked the permit, he admitted they had made a mistake. The crew then packed up their equipment and simply left the site, leaving the house destroyed, Hodgson said. When the woman later returned from vacation, she found a mountain of rubble.

The house has been in her family for several generations. Hodgson says that although it was uninhabited at the time of demolition, it has been immaculately maintained. “We keep the house covered and maintained. We mow the lawn, the yard is clean and the taxes are paid.”

The woman, completely inexplicably, immediately filed a complaint with the police. She also hired a lawyer. However, there is no clarity on how to proceed. The Atlanta company responsible for the demolition, You Call It We Haul It, has not yet contacted the woman. In a statement to WAGA-TV, the company said the incident is being investigated and a solution is being sought. It is not clear how the error occurred.

Meanwhile, the woman was left confused and angry. She finds it incomprehensible that the company has not yet apologized for the error and simply disappeared after that without a word of explanation. “How can people tear down someone’s property and then walk away?” Hodgson asks. “How can they think this is okay? I want them to come in and solve the problem they created themselves. I keep waking up and thinking, is this all a joke? I’m just in shock.”
