How much Aldi is paying for the supermarkets, which are spread across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, was not disclosed. The German discount company reports that the company has invested roughly $2.5 billion in the region since its arrival in the mid-1990s. Aldi recently opened its 26th regional headquarters and distribution center in Alabama, on top of plans to open 20 new locations by the end of the year.
Notably, not all Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s Supermarket stores will reopen under the Aldi banner. Hart is still evaluating which locations will convert to the Aldi format, and said “the intent is that the stores we don’t convert will continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets.” The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2024.
