Algeria recalled its ambassador to France on Tuesday after a letter from President Macron to Moroccan King Mohammed VI recognizing Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara as the sole basis for a political solution.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry denounced this move as a violation of international law and a disregard for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
France was also accused of undermining UN efforts to complete the “decolonisation process” in the region and of abdicating its responsibilities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Algeria has now entrusted its diplomatic representation in France to a chargĂ© d’affaires. It considers French support for the Moroccan plan, proposed in 2007, as explicit support for the “imposed colonial reality” in Western Sahara.
in Message to King Mohammed VIOn the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his accession to the throne, Macron said that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework through which the conflict should be resolved.
The French President described the Moroccan plan as “the only basis for a just, lasting and negotiated political solution in accordance with UN resolutions.”
