A Ryanair plane arriving from Rome made an irregular landing in Charleroi on Saturday evening after the plane's nose became stuck during landing. Passenger Pascal Grosjean (60 years old) from Mortsel witnessed the landing with his wife, and provided us with photos via 4040.
Pascal says it became immediately clear that this was not an everyday landing. “After the rear wheels hit the ground, people started clapping as usual. But when the front wheel hit the ground, it became clear that something was wrong and it became quiet.
There was “a deafening noise and a lot of vibrations in the plane.” The pictures show how the plane flies over the runway with jerks and tremors. “The plane shook and eventually came to a stop diagonally on the track.”
At that moment, the pilot announced that they might have a flat tire, but an inspection by the fire brigade would reveal the real problem: the front wheel had failed during landing. The landing gear appears to have malfunctioned there.
It was not possible to tow the plane away, so it was evacuated about three hours after landing. Passengers were transported to the station by shuttle bus. The reason for the long wait is mainly because there are no such shuttle buses at Charleroi Airport. Pascal had nothing but positive comments for Ryanair's cabin crew. He asserts: “My wife and I would like to thank the pilots and staff for handling this matter correctly and professionally and providing passengers with the correct information at the right time.” “We noticed a certain fear in some of the children, but with this information they were able to better put the incident into perspective.”
