Jan Vertonghen announced his international retirement yesterday. However, his future at Anderlecht remains uncertain.
Officially, Jan Vertonghen has been a free agent since July 1. At 37, the former Red Devil is still thinking about extending his season with Anderlecht, but he fears the season too much.
At the invitation of RTBF, Thorgan Hazard spoke on the subject with his usual dose of humour: “Everyone at Anderlecht hopes he will return, but it is his decision. According to the signs it will be possible. I am pushing him.”
The Purple & White playmaker makes no secret of his admiration for Vertonghen: “He’s a monument, but also someone who brings a good atmosphere, who plays a lot of games. He’s a leader with a fairly strong character on the pitch. Off the pitch. He’s a bit different, he’s very cool.”
Thorgan Hazard optimistic about Red Devils’ future
The man who has 157 caps will leave a huge void at the Red Devils. “I just want to say bravo. For everything he has done and all the games he has played for Belgium. He is someone who always gives everything on and off the pitch.”
Will his announcement of his international retirement inspire others? “I don’t think we should be afraid of it. If some players think it’s time to stop, they will stop. I have confidence in the next generation. We have seen that there are very good players. He has some time and experience and I think we will do well again.”
