Anthropic launches Claude 3 language model, said to outperform GPT-4 and Gemini – IT Pro – News

Anthropic has released Cloud 3. The third generation AI model consists of three versions: Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. Cloud 3 can summarize text of up to 150,000 words and is said to outperform competing language models.

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropy says Claude 3's Opus model outperformed GPT-4 and Gemini 1.0 Ultra from competitors OpenAI and Google in tests in areas including reasoning, programming, and university-level mathematics. Opus is the most advanced and most expensive model. Haiku is the smaller version, and is “faster and more cost-effective.” The model should be able to read a combined research report containing charts and graphs “in less than three seconds.”

This is the first time Claude has offered multimedia support. The Claude 3 can handle text and image input and should be able to summarize texts of up to 150,000 words. It is double what it was before. According to Anthropic, its third-generation language model can also “understand” more context, process longer instructions, and be more accurate than Claude 2.1. The Sonnet, the mid-range model, is said to be twice as fast as the previous generation, and according to Anthropic, it excels at “tasks that require quick responses.”

Anthropic's Claude 3 models according to A paper They are trained on both publicly available information as of August 2023 and non-public third party data. Devices from Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud were used to train the language models. Both Amazon and Google have invested in the startup.

Opus and Sonnet are available as of today, with a Haiku version to follow “soon.” Anthropic charges $15 for every million tokens that make Claude 3 Opus transactions. For comparison, OpenAI charges $10 per million tokens for GPT-4 Turbo operations. Sonnet and Haiku cost $3 and $0.25 respectively for 1 million tokens. A limited free version of Claude is also available, although Anthropic Language Models is not currently officially available in the Netherlands and Belgium.
