Gemert-Bakkel – The municipality of Gemert-Bakkel wants to provide space for two natural cemeteries. Interested parties can submit a plan to the municipality until July 15, 2024.

Gemmert-Backle wants to create space for new forms of burial within its municipal boundaries: “In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for natural cemeteries and the municipality wants to facilitate those who initiate this. The municipality believes that natural burial and the associated increase in biodiversity are in line with the green image.” For the municipality, natural burial also contributes to the green appearance and experience.

Natural cemeteries

The policy was approved at the council meeting on December 14, 2023. “The municipal council wants to provide space for two natural cemeteries and wants to evaluate the policy after three years. There is space for one natural cemetery in Bachel, Millhaes or de Ribes. In addition, one natural cemetery could be created in Gemmert, De Mortel, Handel or Alsendorp.

Submit plan

Gemmert-Bakkel developed an evaluation framework to determine which initiative has the greatest added value to the environment and thus receives permission to create a natural cemetery. Interested parties can submit a plan to the municipality until July 15, 2024.
