This concerns an area in Molenbeekdal and land in Keienveld and Kortemansstraat. The first area is currently classified as a residential area under certain conditions. The other two areas are designated as agricultural areas until January 1, 2025, after which they can be developed for construction. But things cannot reach this point for the municipality of As. In order to combat the pressures of urbanization, Asi wants to preserve open spaces. That is why steps are being taken now.
Asse obtains permission from the Flemish government to arrange the reuse of the plots himself through a municipal implementation plan. “We now have to go through a full procedure,” explains local councilor for public space Peter Verbiest. “First, we are developing a temporary spatial implementation plan to protect the three areas. We will submit this to the municipal council.” This will be followed by a public inquiry and advice from the municipal spatial planning committee. Verbiest hopes to have the RUP approved in November.
“Then we hope that the landowners will want to participate in this story. We have to balance the importance of property rights with the importance of open space. It is not clear, but we are trying to reach an agreement. I think most Žilikin residents find open space very important,” he concludes. Verbest.
