During the first four months of 2024, 2,310 companies have already been declared bankrupt, nearly 10% more than in the previous record period. This was clear from figures released by business information bureau GraydonCreditsafe on Thursday.
In April, 487 companies declared bankruptcy in Flanders, a record number for the month of April. After four months – three of which were a record monthly – the number of bankruptcies now stands at 2,310. “Compared to January-April last year, where we also hit a record, another 9.63 percent increase,” says Graydon.
There were 3,946 bankruptcy judgments across Belgium in the period from January to April. “We are flirting with the record for the same period in 2014 (when we recorded 4,023 permits),” the report says. The construction (846 bankruptcies), transportation (224), and car and garage trade (157) sectors recorded record prices after four months.
During the first four months of the year, 10,661 jobs were at risk in Belgium due to bankruptcies. The largest filing so far is that of vehicle manufacturer Van Hool from Koningshooikt, with 2,535 job losses. This is ten times that of the second most serious bankruptcy, textile company Waregem MC Three Carpets (262 jobs).
